About this book
The first book of the Lantern Company, a fantasy series for young readers. It has nothing to do with the Daniel Thorsen novels.
Saltmire is a cold port city built on top of the ruins of an older one. Wick Marsh is fourteen. He sweeps floors and carries ale at the Drowned Lantern, a tavern where mercenary companies drink and take their contracts, and he keeps an old notice pinned to the contract board: the Grey Hound Company, lost in the Thornwood, fifteen months ago. His brother Aldo was one of them.
The Lantern Company is the worst company in Saltmire. Three failed contracts running, no money, and a licence about to be taken away. Then one stormy night a bottle flies across the taproom, a spell goes off, and Wick feels the magic hang in the air after it, and catches it.
